Persistent Attacks: The Need for Vigilance
News that attackers have breached the servers of RSA, stealing information that could be used to compromise the security of two-factor authentication tokens used by 40 million employees to access sensitive corporate and government networks, has once again highlighted how vulnerable networks can be - even a high profile data security manufacturer such as RSA.
Digital Pathways, a data security specialist, works with companies of all types and sizes to provide security in-depth solutions to mitigate such attacks.
Colin Tankard, Managing Director of Digital Pathways, comments:
“System administrators should be alerted to a persistent attack through their server and fire wall log management systems. By assimilating this information, and analysing it, unusual activity should be alerted and automatically stopped before any data becomes compromised.
“ It would seem in this case given it was an on-going attack that these systems were not in place or not actioned. I would always advise that robust systems are put in place that would automatically stop compromised services or encrypt data in certain locations rather than leave decisions for action to be taken by individuals.
“This case shows that even a top security product manufacturer can be vulnerable. Some may think if it can happen to them what chance do I have? All companies can do is ensure they have in place the very best data security solutions and that their data at rest is encrypted. That way even if data is lost it is unable to be read and therefore worthless.”
